Thank you Dick Hosmer, that helps explain the process and gives a clearer prospective. A lot of this is new to me.

Long ago I’d sent off to SRS for information on rifle # 172986 and got back a photo copy of the original 1899 handwritten listing of every rifle issued to that unit (26th US Vol. Infantry) in 1899 and of every rifle by number in every shipping crate by its number as well as a photo copy of the handwritten Weekly journal and report of that unit while they were on combat duty in the Philipines.
Like with a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.
